CHAPTER 21

We hurried home so Odelia could be on time for the meeting she had called. It would mean that our humans would have to skip dinner, but that was the least of their concerns as the meeting was clearly more important to them than any dinner.

As we rushed over in Chase’s squad car, the topic of conversation was quite understandably the recent interviews with the Fisher family’s neighbors. “Okay, so according to most people we talked to, there wasn’t a lot of interaction between the neighbors and the Fishers,” said Chase as he steered the car through traffic with a steady hand.

“Apart from the fact that Mike’s ladder was a very popular item,” Odelia pointed out.

“Yeah, except for Mike’s ladder. And the unanimous dislike of Chloe Fisher, and the fact that Allison was considered a real sweetheart.”

“Who was also an excellent swimmer, which rules out the theory of an accidental drowning.”

“Even excellent swimmers can drown,” said Chase. “She may have gone for a midnight swim and gotten into trouble. Though I have to admit that I’m favoring more and more the idea that she was also murdered. “Someone is obviously lying to us, Dooley, and now we need to figure out who: Mrs. Malt or Melissa Bell. Though my money is on Melissa being the liar, though it’s unclear what her motivation could be for lying to the police.”

“It’s punishable by law, isn’t it, Max? Lying to the police?”

“It is,” I confirmed. “And if Melissa lied, I can imagine Chase won’t be happy about it.”

We had arrived home and sneaked in through the pet flap while Odelia and Chase made haste to join the rest of their family in Marge and Tex’s backyard. But since we weren’t as keen as they were on this whole idea of skipping dinner, we wanted to have a bite to eat first. We found Harriet and Brutus on the couch watching television. It was a show called ‘Living like Cats and Dogs,’ with cats being interviewed about living with dogs, and vice versa. Though it was all staged, of course, and in cartoon form, so kids could enjoy the antics of both species. But it was funny enough that both Harriet and Brutus were laughing loudly.

“What’s so funny?” asked Dooley with a smile as he hopped onto the couch.

“Oh, this is just so good,” said Brutus. “It’s done mockumentary style, with
